Hooray For Vernon! ![]() Vernon Dursley is so funny! I love Jim Dale's characterization of him... I never thought I'd be wishing Harry spent more time in the company of those Dursleys. I do.... OK, another plot oddity. What was the point of sending two dementors (or "dementoids" as Mr. Dursley calls them!) after Harry, presumably to "get" him? I mean, he had already driven off a much greater number, at school.... I don't really like the rest of the Dursleys.... Mr. Dursley's great though! Mad Eye Moody is great too! I think, even though I'd fancy myself some sort of Dumbledore (and I've got some Dumbledore in me...) actually, I'm probably more like somewhere between Lupin and Moody (OK, a bit of Hagrid too...) Rowling has some cool characters. Characters & Things Does anyone else find Harry less and less likable, as the series continues? I suppose we should expect him to get self-important feeling, much like his father at his age. It's annoying though. Also, he seems mad at his friends and godfather Sirius through much of Phoenix. It gets really old! So which characters do I like? Hmm, Dumbledore - he would be my top male character. Of course, Hermione for the females... Although McGonnnagal was quite entertaining this last book. Ginny? Hmm, she seems to make bad choices in boyfriends - too bad. Other male characters.... I find Lupin more interesting and a lot more likeable than Black... Ron, hmm. *I* can't imagine him with Hermione - as is always speculated. Perhaps Hermione will end up with someone else, like Harry, if Harry can stop being such a jerk a lot of the time... (As if, "I'm mad at you because you're my best friends! I have my reasons, so just understand, for I am the important Harry!" What a jerk. Maybe he just hasn't grown up yet... maybe that's why? Although it's just not fun.) One of the several oddities in Phoenix... How could Harry possibly have *forgotten* the package Sirius had given him, to be able to get in touch with Sirius, whenever he needed to. Sure, long after he could have used it, Harry remembers to check it out. But if Sirius is so important to Harry, how could he have ignored that package, completely. Doesn't make sense, and is one of several reasons I didn't find Sirius as big of a character after the third book, as he supposedly is (in Harry's life.) Actually, the more I think about it, I can understand Harry's anger in some scenes.... Oh well, it still doesn't make it fun to read about all the time! ..... Isn't it bizarre how Lucius Malfoy is given so much rein? It seems like he does about whatever he pleases. Can't Dumbledore or his supporters do something about that guy? Yes, I understand he's an important character. Just doesn't make sense to me. Also, about the first prophecy... It looks like that could have been heard, by just gaining access to Dumbledore's office, and getting a taste of all those stored memories of his, like Harry did. Also, the prophesy really doesn't give any clue about how to destroy either Harry or the the villain. Hmmm. It would *not* have been a weapon to know, at this point! Ha hahaha! The Ministry of Magic calls that villain, "Lord.. Thingee." H ahah ha haa!!! Tuesday, July 22, 2003
Girl ![]() Yes, Hermione! Ha haha ha ha... She turns out to be quite a little liar! So clever! She's leading Umbridge on some sort of wild goose chase now. Ha ha, that Umbridge woman is so stupid! Still I wish Jim Dale could actually do a convincing young girl.... He does most women quite well - he's really good. I hate **his** Hermione, though! Hmm, I think I can guess where they're going, in the forest... :-) It's about time they used some really good subterfuge on that awful woman. I love Hermione! She's great! It's amazing how fast she transforms from a brave little being, to a frightened little girl, then back again. It's like, you want to protect her, but then, at other times you wonder if she needs your help. Of course, she does..... ("Hermione grabbed Harry's arm, as if frightened...") It's a little annoying already knowing who dies before I've heard the story... Oh well, I'm just glad it's not Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore, or Hagrid... (Of course it wouldn't be Harry.) Harry's Best Friend One huge advantage Ron has, is his large family... Like Fred and George, they're great! The other thing is, of course Ron and Harry are both in the boy's dormitory. So they're naturally together more than Hermione and Harry. It's like Ron and Harry are best friends, and she is the next best friend to them. Ron is such an everyday Joe. I think Harry likes that about him. "He was glad Hermione {wasn't there}... He could tell Ron though!" (From Order of the Phoenix) At work today, I noticed a new photo on one of my co-workers bookcase. I was sneaking a peak at it when she returned. I had guessed it was the group of her girlfriends who get together each year, and rent a cabin together. This year's photo was particularly good.... She started talking about how long she'd known each woman, and how they met. Finally, she added, "I'm loyal." Wow.... I'd sure like to have friends like that - to know each other and happily get together decade after decade. I wonder if I will ever accomplish that... I can say I'm loyal. Hmmmm... I bet Ron, Harry and Hermione will be close, twenty or thirty years out. More than once, I've *thought* I found at least one such person in my life. My latest lasted for years. Then, poof, gone. As if hit with some evil spell or something.... Harry was growing so close to Professor Lupin, before he left. Even though they still talk now and then, it's not the same. Lupin is so far away. It's *nothing* like seeing each other often, and in person. Kind of like email will *never* be like knowing a person, and being close, in person. Email *is* better than sticking one's head through a fireplace to talk, but it's still nothing like being there. Potter Thoughts (in a rough state) Hermione *does* get carried away with following the rules. That would get annoying, I'd think. Her and Harry don't really seem to have a spark-ish chemistry, either. She's so bossy, too. Fine for an almost best friend, I guess - not exactly an attractive quality in a girlfriend though. I'm really seeing why Harry doesn't see *her* as a romantic interest. Hermione is very clever. She'd make a really fine assistant. She has a really hard time thinking outside of a certain set of self-rules. She seems to need to be led.... Like, by Harry. As Harry hollers at her (and he could have many other times, when he didn't) "You just don't get it!" It's strange... Hermoine is incredibly intelligent, and yet, she misses some of the big points. She sees all the details. Just that she misses what it all adds up to sometimes. Umbridge is scary in Phoenix. We used to have a personnel manager with the same fake, sickly evil smile as this woman. I've also experienced at least two inquisitor types over the years, too. I'm still in the process of listening to the audio version (and reading a bit of it now and then) of the Order of the Phoenix the first time through (through the kindness of others ;-)). I have a feeling that mean witch will get hers, eventually. I don't see her as ending up having admirable qualities (like Snape, for example.) Ha, she *is* fun to hate, though! "Wipe that sickly smile off your face!" Unfortunately, people like that *do* gain power sometimes... That fake gentility of hers is really annoying! About Dumbledore.... There are some things I have a hard time understanding. Like, if Dumbledore is such a powerful wizard, and so clever, why can't he find a way to undermine, or get rid of, the Ministry of Magic? He is cool though. He comes up with some great stuff. I used to know someone nearly like that. *He* made some curious hiring decisions too, though. I wish he'd never moved on....Oooo boy, I wrote too soon! This is fun, finally Dumbledore breaks away... I've been surprised about Sirius Black. I really liked him in Prisoner of Akabar. I think I had high hopes about his future involvement in Harry's life. Seems like about the most useful thing he's done so far, though, is give Harry a weekend pass note. I was expecting a lot more cool advice and things... Even though Harry's glad to have him, his godfather, he just doesn't seem to add a whole lot. I like Lupin better. |
