Watching Music Lately, I've got more channels to watch than I ever have in my life. More documentaries, more music, more news. I was really looking forward to having VH1 Classic....That channel's been quite disappointing though. So far, I think I may have seen before every good 60s video they've shown... I'm starting to wonder how many videos they even have at their disposal. They *are* strong on the Beach Boys, which is good... Although, it's pretty much things I already have. One of the more annoying things happens all too often on their 60s showcases. Hmm, actually two things. First, they'll play later, or much later, renditions of hit songs. Like, Paul McCartney and the Wings performing some Beatles song. What, they can't get the real thing? Yoko says no? (Urgh to her!@@##%!) Or, hippie tired looking Everly Brothers performing "Dream, Dream, Dream." They can't dig up a contemporary video? The other thing is all those old songs with new videos. Pink Floyd's "Whiter Shade Of Pale" with some new funky video. What's the point of that? Maybe I just haven't seen the good, rare stuff yet.... still waiting. Another thing... They mix up totally unrelated videos, most of the time. 60's/70's/80's, various genres. Ok, so I like to do that personally. I have better taste though, and I'm much more clever in my selections. ;-) One of the high points of this new channel lineup so far is Trio. I watched a program about Northern California & Oregon hippies and bums the other night. Kind of interesting, and very familiar. I think I'm discovering I really don't enjoy watching music all that much though. (I'm not talking a good live show, where one can dance around in wild abandon!) Trio's got a cool program called "Sessions On West 54th"... I watched parts of three Sessions with three women I've enjoyed listening to in the past. First up, PJ (Polly Jean) Harvey, ..... I knew she was weird. She looked and sounded weirder still watching her in a live performance on TV though. Plus, her dancing is just strange. Ah well.. Next, I watched a little of Liz Phair. She looked kind of tired and bored, and her dancing around was boring too. Then they interviewed her a little... That was the worst. She came across stuck up and full of herself - just un-charming... Finally, I watched some of the Cranberries. Oh man, Dolores is too radical for me. She looked pretty nice.... But she danced strangely, not entertainingly. She seems so militant - kind of anti-feminine.... I wonder if it's maybe just that I don't enjoy watching music nearly so much as listening to it??? Although, then there's Avril Lavigne. I'll write more about some of her live stuff later (MPEGs) and an interview on Swedish TV. That girl handles herself a lot better. She looks cool when she dances and sings, too. [Note... I feared this!! I've been watching *way* too much TV. I'll get over it.] Friday, April 11, 2003
Immersed ![]() Some of my happiest days, were when I was deeply immersed in reggae... I met some nice people then... Thursday, April 10, 2003
High Pollen I looked at the weather forecast locally, 56 degrees, cloudy, showery. I wasn't expecting it to tell me about the local pollen level. The flyer across the top, which usually has storms, floods and the like, says my local pollen level is high. Allegra has a site which purports to tell you the pollen level locally, and which particular pollen is active at the moment. Wednesday, April 09, 2003
I Wonder Years back, Coors beer wasn't available here... If you wanted any, you basically had to drive down to California to get it. So, one summer, I did that... While on vacation down there I packed up my trunk with cases of Coors, for myself, and to share with my college buddies. Seemed like a pretty big deal at the time. Now, I can't imagine doing that. Coors is just another beer. A beer I haven't drank a sip of for years.... This afternoon, I saw yet another article about the upcoming Krispy Kreme doughnut shops opening in the area, starting this summer. I'm starting to wonder, if they really *are* all that great. Hmm, well, I don't eat doughnuts very often anyway (which you probably wouldn't know by looking at me!) I mean, we've got doughnut shops already, good and bad. The best is probably Beaverton Bakery, which is excellent. Possibly KK will be better than them, possibly not. I wonder. Dodgy As a Dodger fan, I find this expression really funny! I think it's more confined to the NE of the US.. Dodgy! Ha ha aha... I used to know someone who'd say that, and I laughed every time I heard it. Anyway, I was just listening to the latest on public radio - - even though I've cut back on watching and listening, personally - - and the correspondent was talking about how things had been getting pretty "dodgy" for her and the other correspondents there in Baghdad. She's happy to see the two US tanks outside her hotel, now. (Ha, then she described a "nasty" Iraqi intelligence agent, who has suddenly turned quite different, begging the journalists, "Don't do anything to me..." and throwing out his intellignce ID...Anne Garrels does some nice reports.) Ties On Guys The sun is shining, it feels brand new outside. Wish I could say the same for me. Hey, wait a minute. The Laura in my department told me I look nice today. That was nice. I should pay others compliments, more often, instead of just thinking things....I think women like ties on guys. (Later edit: Now, if my friend Laura would have passed me and told me I looked nice today, wow, I don't know what I'd do. "How'd she get here? I think I'm going crazy!") Tuesday, April 08, 2003
I wonder if my little ray of sunshine has burnt out.... (Edit remark, later: maybe it's partly the long, ever returning, cold winter. Look at me here. It's sunny today, sort of nice, and I'm feeling a little spark in spite of myself. How can one be sunny when the cold is bearing down on you, week after week, month after month.) What A Picture Charles, one of my new neighbors, just painted quite a picture of the folks who used to live in my house, while he kept me plied with his various home brews, all smooth and deadly. Cool guy. They're so thankful to have someone like me here. He he.... I mean, I fit in to the neighborhood, I guess. Cut Up Ice Before modern refrigerators, they'd cut up ice from frozen ponds and lakes, and ship it around the country. So you could have an iced drink wherever. My question is, why didn't it melt? How could it possibly go hundreds or thousands of miles, with no refrigeration, and stay as ice? See why I like documentaries!? It's bizarre. Swindled ![]() An early sewing machine pioneer went to England, trying to promote his invention. He was swindled. Same with me. I mean, the only trade, out of many I've done with people over the years, in various countries, was with a guy who lived in London, England. He purposefully broke an LP - to break my heart and convince me to make another trade for a "good" copy. I only found out later this was intentional, from another then-friend, who had the same thing happen. That was one of the experiences which has sort of caused me to lose my romance for that country. Although, my beloved UB40 still hails from there... A cold hearted girl I once used to see was from there too... Interesting, nothing like the warm girls I've found here though. Hmm, maybe I just got unlucky.... That still ranks as my *only* bad experience trading with many people, years ago, with reggae. Amazing. Guys in different parts of the US, Sweden, Finland, Denmark etc., and never something like that..... Although, the street vendor I used to buy some cool stuff from was cool... I think perhaps my expectation that somehow English guys would be particularly upstanding, was sadly brought down. Gee thanks, Steve Hunter of London. Unexpected Nudity So, I've got a few hours at home, time to clean out some of my TiVo recorded programs. One I choose this morning is Modern Marvels (one of my favorite series.) I love the old footage of pre-appliances and things. So I'm watching, and suddenly, while they're talking about the advent of electricity, there are two naked girls in front of me, from the back/side. Now, why are two black and white naked girls' bottoms right there in front of me right now??? Bizarre. I love how TiVo can pause indefinitely... Baaaaaaaad! Well, it's not like someplace you go with "nude" in the title, and you can expect to see nudity - - a beach, a place with dancers, or things like that. No, it's a perfectly innocent documentary, the kind I like best (usually.) However, there are naked girls' bottoms in front of me. Unexpected nudity. DTV ![]() I love Direct TV. I guess I'm a documentary junkie. I'm like, "well, if I like A&E Biographys, the Biography channel would be even better." An hour ago, I started watching a program on the M1a Abrahms tank. Cool. Now, this is even better. Discovery Health channel is airing a program called "Making Of A Hangover." They have six 20 and 30 something men and women, and asked each how much they drink each time. Boy, I don't drink much, in comparison! I understand drinking. I don't understand daily drinking. How can anyone's body handle and enjoy drinking every day? Wow, this one 190 pound guy, Robert, has had 7 drinks in one hour, and he doesn't even look drunk! Cool... And it just started raining. I love looking out at the rain. OK, now Robert is looking more and more drunk/hungover. |
