I Love You Because "I love you for a hundred thousand reasons...Most of all, I love you, because you're you..." I want *all* of Elvis Presley's "50's Complete Masters".... So charming, and sounds so fresh. Last Sunday, I listened to some of a Sunday afternoon public radio program, billed as an Elvis commenerative. The annoying thing was, they played a whole lot of "not-Elvis", including some originals of songs he made into hits. Just about every original was not nearly so good, as the Elvis version. I sort of love that. It's so un-allowed to think of singers' versions as better than lesser known orignals. Yet, with a singer like Elvis, that's obviously the case, and in at least the early days, pretty much the rule. Thursday, August 22, 2002
Neil & George I'm just listening to some George Jones after a long bye. OOoo, I love his "A Goodbye Joke." He pretends so well, that his love has just played a trick on him, she's really not gone, her note to him was just a joke... I've been reading snippets from the new Neil Young biography, "Shakey", the last couple days. Lots of Neil quotes in there.. In one, he says he threatened his record company that he'd turn into George Jones, if they didn't stop bugging him... At first I was thinking, he was somehow putting down Mr. Jones. That's possible I suppose. Well, Neil's not "better" than George, so I hope not. They're completely different, but Jones is amazing, and to turn into him, as an artist, doesn't seem like much of a threat to me. Anyway, maybe what he meant was, that he'd develop more of a taste for alcohol. Or he'd switch to straight soulful country. Almost A Lifetime Away I'm listening to a cassette of some selections from a Bob Dylan bootleg, captured onto this particular tape, 19 years ago last month. Almost a lifetime away. "Santa Fe", and a weird, hesitant version of "If Not For You." (I know this blog's been quiet lately... I've been busy in several ways...) |
