Real Live The actual Woke Up Falling is sounding a lot cooler than the pretenders by the studio DJ.... :-) Oh great. They started late, so we get to hear all of three songs. :-/ Flat ![]() The cool thing about champagne is, when it goes flat a week later, it's still good wine. :-) Hey the fourth track is pretty cool... Spacy. I kind of like there guys, Woke Up Falling. Well their fourth song makes it 2 of 5 winners. I'm just not in the mood for hardcore/thrash. They do seem pretty versatile though. Now, on the sixth, they suddenly have a girl backing singer? An almost cool song. So far still just 2 of 6 I'd really want to listen to again though... Mmmm, make that 3 of 7. Very nice instrumental... Yeah, if they can do that kind of stuff (Wait, wait, that was Cornelius... OH sheesh... give me a break. What a hoax!!!!!!!! THey have no girl, and they haven't even played yet?? No, they are late and still setting up.. Mmm, I like the bass guitar in the background. Sheesh!!!!!!!!!!! Absolutely none of what I just reported on was Woke Up Falling. What a bunch of amateurs! ;-) Well! KPSU is a great time... But what a crock! How about some promised live stuff? Well at least they're playing some Woke Up Falling album music now... SheesH!!!!) Music Radio OK, I guess I'll try it... I just found out KPSU, the coolest local college radio station, is on the net now.. Tonight, they're supposed to have a group which has a guy I used to work in it on... OK, Zack, let's see if your new group, Woke Up Falling, is any good! Hmm, well so far, at least the sound quality is a ton better than Channel 4 UK, which has a Brian Wilson video interview out there on Thursday's show, right now.. Oh man, this is hard. I was just listening to some reggae, thinking of putting together a new CDR.. This is pretty far from reggae. Ugh, where's that real audio recording software when I wish I had it! Ha, I read an interview of these guys, where success was described as being able to pay the rent, and put out albums... Hmm, well the second mellower song they're playing is real cool. It's so cool that KPSU is online now!! Last time I checked, they weren't yet... Those college kids have some fun eclectic taste.. A good place to get exposed to something different. Oh man, this song!! Yeah! Hmm, well the third song makes it one of three, akk! I guess it's time to go check on my wash.. Earrings Guys look stupid in earrings!! That's one fad I'll be happy to see be gone... Hey, it's fun to have a place to spout off now and then. :-) We even have an outside auditor guy with two earrings. Now *that* inspires confidence! Ak. mmm-MM-mm I love that part!! Just after the start of "The Leanover", Sue Tompkins makes that sound... I've figured out that both of my favorite songs by Life Without Buildings remind me of someone else. "The Leanover" tune sounds a lot like Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car", the instrumentation. The vocals are entirely different, however. It took me days to place that tune, but it's really similar. My other favorite, a real different laid back, mellow one, "Sorrow", is the one which sounds a great deal like the Velvet Underground.... So, their two best songs sound like someone else. I don't really care, they're great! Plus, they're different in that no one else vocalizes like Sue does. I Kissed Her ...} ![]() Last night I woke up in the middle, as I usually seem to do lately. I never dreamed I'd have a dream about this girl though! I was downtown next to a big fountain. I noticed some kids around, playing and splashing in the water. It was warm, and I thought I'd sit down in the shade and watch a little. There must have just been some sort of festival or event, because there were a lot of people of all ages down there.. I couldn't really see the kids very well from where I was sitting, but that was OK, I was just soaking in the ambience. I was thinking what a nice shady spot I had, just out of the sun. I looked over to my left, and there was the girl, J., who I'd seen in the local paper a couple days ago! She was smiling, and her eyes were twinkling with delight. Impulsively, I kissed her... Just a little kiss, on the lips. She looked surprised, but not unhappy.. We started to talk, and I told her I had been wanting to meet her. She was a little surprised, as we'd never laid eyes on each other until that moment. I told her I'd seen her picture in the paper, and I had been thinking of writing her. However I didn't want to intrude on her privacy, I explained. (Of course, when I found her just sitting by me by chance, looking so sweet and inviting, well, I kissed her without really thinking...) In a short while, we went to go, in *her* car. We were just about to get in, when this guy she apparently knew came up, and he wanted to come too! She looked mildly annoyed, but said OK. He sat in the back quietly, while her and I continued our conversation, as she drove to her place. It was still quite warm out, must have been late summer.. She drove right up onto a curb, to get her car into a slim shady spot. Then, she jumped up out of her car and rushed towards her place. I think she wanted to ready it just a little, before her new acquaintance entered. When the other guy got out of the back seat, I looked at him. He looked pretty odd. I think he was gay, and I am thinking he had volunteered himself, just as a chaperone sort of, since she really didn't know me, and was taking me home with her.... As she was getting close to her door, she was taking her shorts off, revealing another tighter pair of shorts underneath. I think she was starting to change clothes real quick, without thinking... Then, ahhh, I woke up! Tuesday, January 29, 2002
Q: Why Are We All Dressed Like That? A: We're going to a funeral. "I'm getting scared, and that's a fact. Why are we all dressed like that? All in black..." UB40's "Guns In The Ghetto", the title song, never gets tiresome, to me. It's so gorgeously sad and loving. Captured If anyone ever asked me what's so great about UB40 live, I'd say, listen to this. "As Always You Were Wrong Again", a boot (Red Wine & Whiskey) from 1985.. That tour was I saw them on a double date with my then friend Jack and his wife...Ak, it was at the Civic though, all squished into their theater seats. Luckily I was on the aisle, so I stood and danced into the hall, being pushed back in by the ushers now and then... They've said since that they recorded that album in a hurry, so they think it sounds rushed. Maybe, but there are two or three gems... The fun and excitement of a UB40 show is really captured on that one song in particular... the bass line, the horns, Ali Campbell's unique sound..{A footnote.. I like their actual released live stuff too, and own the LPs/CDs of their 1982 show and Moscow, plus the videos from the '82 show, Moscow, and the New South Africa (a scary place) & live singles, etc. Just that, this version of this song isn't on any of those, so you really need the bootlegs too, a few of theirs anyway. As with any good band I suppose...} ![]() Titles Titles are so useless sometimes. I mean, well, "Silent Witness" *is* a cool title, but the song *feels* much more like "Neon Haze" to me. Or how about Dylan's "On The Banks Of The Royal Canal" (a cover?)... That's the Triangle song!! Who needs the real title. Of course, some people might think the same thing about my titles for each post. ;-) ....Ahh, I just saw a photo of a lovely woman in yesterday's local paper, which made me wish I could meet her (thinking of her in an unattached and possibly receptive state.) Hmm, I don't know if I could ever really get myself to write someone out of the blue, like that... The trouble is, how can you even have a clue, about whether that person would be interested in you? They Suffer? As I listen to the whole album again, a familiar thing is happening. I love a couple songs on this 10 song CD, "Any Other City." "The Leanover" is a thrill to listen to. I feel more alive with it. "Sorrow" affects me similarly. The problem is, compared to these tracks, how can any other LWB song on this CD impress me? I think they suffer... It's not really fair. It's Not Time Yet! I keep thinking about all the times I couldn't eat something, because I wanted it at the "wrong" time.. Hmm, that's a cool thing about the internet. It's open whenever you want it. Of course, you may not be able to communicate with who you'd like, depending on when it is... but still. You can write, look, listen, any time at all! As far as breakfast out... I used to enjoy it a lot more often. My biggest problem would be, I'd get up too early for my favorite places! "Oh, it's morning, it's light out, they must be open.." That's happened to me more than once, and with different places too. I used to really like the cozy Mt. Tabor Cafe, over on SE Hawthorne. They have good coffee, and I like the feel of the place. But I swear, they just don't open up early! Especially on Sundays. I think they must open up at 9:00AM. That's a ridiculously late opening time for breakfast... Hey, even Elmer's, a **pancake house,** has given me similar woes. Sorry, it's not time yet! Haze, 29F ![]() So, this morning I checked to see how cold it says it is out here. "29 Degrees. Haze." "Neon Haze".... I *knew* I should have brought my newly burned UB40 set in this morning!!! Ahhhh! Ugh, I just looked, and I have the oddball 2nd version of this CDR I made a while ago. My version with "Neon Haze" (that's the dub, the actual song title escapes me) isn't here. The Neon Haze song was defective, and I couldn't find a substitute then, and didn't have things hooked up to dub it from vinyl... So I foolishly remade the whole CDR. I went to more of the upbeat, more recent UB40 songs. Luckily, I happened upon the original version again a few days back, and it's so much better. It's the real UB40, complete with some of their powerful early stuff... Now, I've found a fixed version of Neon Haze (actually the vocal of it) so I'm all set. I just need to do some sleeves and such. "Haze," funny how a word or phrase can make you recall or start thinking....I thought of it!! The song is really more of a neon haze, but anyway, it's called "Silent Witness." I love UB40. I've never stopped loving them. Not Now Mmm, Laura has a cool essay on how you can't get the food you want when you want it, if you want it when they think you shouldn't.. That drives me nuts! Near here, there's a pretty good "Texas barbeque" place called Busters. The thing I like **most** there is a chipped beef sandwich. It's really good and tender with their sauce all over it, the bun's good, and it's also an excellent value, with their crinkly fries... Well, I've found out, you can't even *get* that sandwich outside of their definition of lunch time!! Not for any price! No, no, go there at 2:00PM (or it might be 1:30) and you're out of luck. You have to settle for some other inferior, and more expensive, sandwich. It makes no sense at all! So, basically, I can't go there for dinner. What kind of deal is that? OK, what about groceries? Well, I was thinking, "Hey, we have this 24 hour Cub Foods here now, and I can go there at 3:00AM, if I choose, kind of cool." I used to shop there frequently, although they've kind of fallen out of favor for a number of reasons now.. Anyway, I did that once, hmm, must have been a little over a year ago. I was up, couldn't go back to sleep, so I thought, "hey, no problem, I'll just head over and get what's on my list." Well, it wasn't so simple!! That place was crawling with night stocking people, with boxes in the aisles, restocking the shelves. What's so bad about that? You could hardly get through! There were so many boxes. Plus, I got the distinct impression that I wasn't supposed to be there then. "Get out, can't you see we have stocking work to do! You're in the way! Be gone! Don't hassle us!" That 24 hour stuff with them, is only in theory. Sheesh, I'd rather go hungry! Frosty Blades Ah, the joys of winter!! :-) Once I got under way this morning, I was looking around at the frosty landscape. Most of the snow melted off yesterday, but there are still a few stubborn snowmen remnants to be seen. They don't exactly look like snowmen anymore, but you can tell they were.. So, I'm just driving and hoping I don't hit any pockets of ice on the road, greatly loving listening to Sue Tompkins of LWB again...It's too much fun, I don't really want to get out and walk in to work.. Ah well... I like going through the front, to the elevator.... I don't like going *up* stairs this early. My body likes to ease into such things more slowly.. So, anyway, the front security door is out of order, again! Ahhhh! I walk over to the side, as I must.. Then, what?! A beautiful surprise! Ohhhh, the blades of grass over there, each one frosted individually... Mmmm.. Sometimes, I love winter! (I wish I had my camera though!) Monday, January 28, 2002
Raging Debate I swear I didn't read this, or anything else about the band, before thinking outloud yesterday that Life Without Buildings sounds a lot like Velvet Underground... Except VU didn't have Sue Tompkins for a vocalist & lyricist. "On the internet, debate is raging as to whether these guys are equal to, or better than, The Velvet Underground." Laid Back Coolness Oh man, the loping bass guitar on Life Without Buildings' "Sorrow" makes me lazy! I can imagine sitting in a garden, just grooving..It's fun to listen to her largely spoken little story too. Sunday, January 27, 2002
VU-Like "Sorrow" sounds really Velvet Underground-like to me. Even though the female English singer.. (of Life Without Buildings.) Oh {flip} yes!!!!!! How can a 6:53 song actually keep your interest? :-) Yeah. "Don't smoke in bed - with me!" 'Sorrow, now..." 36 I love it... So many times this winter, I've looked up, and it's 30-something degrees. Feels like winter. I love it. I hate winters where it's often 50+ and raining. Give me the 30's any day, this time of year. Unless I was some place sunny.. like say, Hawaii! Jamaica? Scary. Arizona? Mexican prescription drugs?? (Oh dammm, I am really, really loving some of this Life Without Buildings. That girl can sing. Mmmm, funny British girl.) Life Without Buildings ![]() Hmm, I kind of like buildings... Life Without Buildings sounds like a pretty cool band though... **Another** girl singer band.. Their album, "Any Other City," I like my first listen... Oh yes. Of course, I just popped open a bottle of my bargain Spanish champagne. A Brut, this one. I found a use for my promo parmesan cheese little jars, too!! I tend to break champagne glasses, if I'm not careful. Not today! :-) I found a use... The only problem is, it seems tiny, so it goes down too quick! ;-) Oooo, LWB, "Juno" and "The Leanover." Real cool!! Thank God for music! Solex Groove Oh man, I want more Solex!! I did a hard drives search on "People" earlier, looking for whatever "People Get Ready" versions I might have on this machine right now... Up came a million "People" songs and albums! One was a Solex song, from my old never really reviewed "Need to Sort Through" Napster directory from way back! On another drive which I rarely use for music any more... He hee.. I've sort of left that stuff out there, knowing I'd happen upon it some time, and I might find a surprise or two... Ohhhh, I love surprises. Especially sweet musical ones on a snowy afternoon. OK, wait, I have to listen to "Train Mobile" again.. Wow these guys (& girl lead singer) are pretty weird. I want more!!! Oh, the song which turned up, and is now headed for my next CDR? Solex's "That's What You Get With People Like That On Cruises Like This." Ooo, I love "Train Mobile" just now.. I think it's got to get on a CDR too. I have to blast it in my CRV!........... Yeah! People are so snow giddy here today! We haven't had it for a while, and it's just **fun**! ...... I think I could really like the video for "Solex All Licketysplit" if it would just play correctly.. Real audio, ahhhh... That trippy guitar gets me though! ... Hmm, I have about 3 million things open, and a couple more on their way. I suppose it will be time for my PC to crash now, soon... Finally 4WD Time Of course, now that it's finally snowy, and I might find a use for my real time four wheel drive.. Now, my CRV doesn't particularly want to go out! I think it's worried someone else might slide into it! Well, it has a short trip coming up... :-) SW Portland Wonderland ![]() I love it! For once, were getting the areas snow over here in my area... We just got another big flurry this morning, while I was making Malt-O-Meal... Hoping for more. Perfect timing too, for once! It started Saturday midday, and the biggest part of the storm was early Saturday evening, early enough to get out and feel some snow in the dark... All right!!! It's snowing again... Beautiful!! Time for a walk... |
